Jennifer Stout Prioritizes Residents in City Council Race

By Jeremy Bochniak

Jennifer Stout is fearless when speaking her mind.

“I am extremely transparent,” Stout said in an interview with Island Matters on Friday. “I’m going to be honest with that because if we are working for the people, they need to know what we’re doing.”

Stout is a native Texan who lived in Denton most of her life. Like many other candidates, she vacationed here in South Padre for about 20 years. Despite the island's most alluring seasons, Stout initially considered maintaining her residence elsewhere after purchasing a townhome in 2017. However, she and her husband Randy embraced full-time island living in 2022 and have cherished it ever since. Stout is an animal lover, adopting turtles and taking her dogs out for walks on the beach.

Stout worked in law since she was 19 years old until her retirement. While Stout volunteered on committees in Denton, she didn’t want to jump into anything she wasn’t fully committed to in SPI. Now, with a golden opportunity, Stout is ready for a major role in the city as a City Councilwoman.

Her position is clear, she wants to put the residents of South Padre Island first.

“The residents have been forgotten. They have my platform and my focus is on the residents of the island,” Stout said.

Stout has a great understanding of the boom of short-term rentals the island has seen and is pro-tourism and pro-business. She’s a short-term rental owner herself. Stout still wants to see more attention to create a better long-term solution, not only for the renters, but for the residents who are here every single day. Stout also wants to see long-standing tax venue projects, such as the Laguna Blvd. construction, finished.

“We need to get Laguna Blvd. done,” Stout said.

Lastly, Stout has paid great attention to the different forms of transportation and safety measures on the island and would like to form a better solution to ensure better safety, especially during the busiest times of the year. Stout recalls getting hit by a Golf Cart in 2022 and wonders what she can do to better manage that risk so fewer situations arise going forward.

“There’s too much traffic and not enough control,” Stout said.

Control calls for more law enforcement, which Stout agrees should be taken care of.

“You have police officers that come and start their career here for a year, year and a half. If they don’t get paid enough, they’re going to Brownsville.”

Early voting begins Wednesday, January 17th. Go out and vote!
