City Council Notes

by Jeremy Bochniak

City Council had its first session of 2024 this past Wednesday, here are the notes of the meeting.

The Art Business Incubator’s will be hosting three Art Fest events this year. The nearest, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 3, gives local artists a chance to showcase their skills to the public in a free event that you can attend. The City Council approved the special event (Art Fest). The event will run from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.

The hot discussion of the evening was the South Padre Island Code of Ordinances, which focused on Chapter 12 of the City Code of Ordinances.

Multiple property owners from the Embassy condominiums came to discuss the noise from their neighbors at Coco Beach. Many members of the Embassy Condos pleaded to the City Council to include in its draft, a lower decibel number. No agreement was made but discussions will be ongoing in future council sessions.

Kathryn Willingham was unanimously voted to serve on the Parks and Keep SPI Beautiful Committee that was left vacated. Willingham will carry out the rest of the remaining one year term.

The next City Council Meeting will take place on Feb. 7.
