CVAB: Optimistic Update on Tourism Trends

by Sarah-Victoria Lozano de Gonzalez

In a recent gathering at City Hall, the Conventions and Visitors Advisory Board received a favorable report from the Zimmerman agency regarding its Predictive Data Lab (PDL). The report highlighted the island's robust occupancy, a high average daily rate (ADR) from the previous year, and positive indications for overall revenue in the upcoming year.

A particular standout was the thriving midwestern market, showcasing substantial growth. Moreover, increased budget allocation and visible positive outcomes from Fiscal Year 2023 to Fiscal Year 2024 are attributed to a notable surge in web traffic. These promising developments signal a buoyant period for the island's tourism industry.

CVB Monthly Highlights: A Vibrant Start to the Year

In January, the CVB orchestrated a highly successful "Pickle Ball on Padre" event, drawing approximately 200 attendees daily for five consecutive days, totaling around 1,000 participants.

Events Manager April Brown reported on the event's success, revealing plans for its continuation in January 2025.

Looking ahead, the CVB has exciting plans for a "Visit SPI" (VSPI) event titled "Tourism Town Hall" at the Brew Pub on Thursday, February 22, 2024, at 6 p.m.

The event's objective is twofold – to expound the impactful initiatives undertaken by VSPI within the community and to gather public perceptions through a survey. This initiative aims to enhance community understanding and qualify for inclusion in the industry standards for Destinations International.

Cindy Treviño, Director of Marketing and Corporate Sponsorships, shared insights into collaborative Spring Break plans with Isla Grand's General Manager, Daniel Salazar. The CVAB team is actively organizing engaging activities, including University battles featuring games like tug of war, water balloon toss, karaoke, and more.

Stay tuned for the upcoming festivities that promise to add vibrancy to Spring Break on the island.

CVB Funding Allocations

The board deliberated and approved funding requests under the recommendations of the CVB Director, Blake Henry. Notable approvals include:

  • Splash Unified: The Commission approved $10,000 for the upcoming April event at The Holiday Inn Beach Resort, which initially sought $15,000.
  • Fiesta Padre Sandcastle Competition: The Commission approved $5,000 for the upcoming April event at The Holiday Inn Beach Resort, which initially sought $15,000. CVB has assigned Representative Andy Hancock the responsibility of delivering a comprehensive report for future consideration.
  • Shallow Sport Fishing Tournament: The Commission approved the request of $25,000 in full.
  • SPI Half Marathon: The Commission approved $10,000 in marketing with an additional $1,000 earmarked for Monterrey marketing efforts for the Nov. event at The Holiday Inn Beach Resort, which initially sought $15,000.

The decisions made during this funding allocation session reflect the CVB's commitment to supporting diverse community events.

CVAB has scheduled its next meeting for February 28 at 9 a.m., where further community initiatives will be discussed and evaluated.

Stay tuned for updates on the impactful contributions these events will bring to our vibrant community.
