City Council Notes for February 21st

City Council resumed session Wednesday, February 21st.

 

Council started with new City Councilwoman Lisa Graves being sworn into her chair. There was also an update on Laguna Boulevard.

 

6.1

City Secretary Nikki Soto announced a change in the city’s text alerts, now known as “Operational/Non-emergency Alerts.” These messages will include inclement weather, road closures, potential events, reminders, etc. Soto says if you are enrolled in the city texts now, you must re-enroll in the program. You can enroll through the city’s newsletter, website, or social media platforms.

 

6.2

Councilman Joe Ricco was appointed Mayor Pro-Tem effective February 21st through the end of the year.

 

6.3

Shoreline Director Kristina Bourka announced the intention to enter a contract with Bryant Industrial Services, LLC for Fantasy Circle on beach access #22. This project includes a revamped parking, a permanent restroom, and a drinking and rinse-off fountain. Bryant Services submitted their bid at $831,414. The council approved a budget amendment for the same amount and entered a contract with Bryant Services, LLC.

 

6.4

The council approved a second and final reading over maximum speed limits in South Padre Island and prohibited overnight parking in public parking areas.

 

6.5

The council approved an Ad-hoc Committee. Mayor Patrick McNulty wanted a committee for the election year and a general cleaning up when it comes to committees and who can be appointed. The people who will be on the committee may be appointed at the next City Council meeting.

 

6.8

The council approved an action to prohibit overnight parking in the parking lot in the median of the HWY 100 area by the causeway and to allow signage that overnight parking is not permitted.

 

6.9

The council passed a moratorium on new parking permits issued to projects with four or more bedrooms using off-site parking components that did not have more than four designated on-site parking spaces. They will send this issue to the Planning and Zoning Commission as the next step.

 

The next City Council Session will be on March 6th.
