City Council Notes

by Jeremy Bochniak

The session on this past Wednesday was short and sweet, lasting approximately 28 minutes. Here are some notable takeaways from the March 6th session.

6.1

The Council approved a new policy for occupancy tax payments and agreements, including a waiver of penalties and interest. The City of South Padre Island has observed a rise in requests for payment plans related to these occupancy taxes. The objective is for the new policy to assist with future requests and to provide clarity for the involved taxpayers.

6.2

The City Home Rule Charter ADHOC Committee is now complete with members, including Chris Huffman, a Real Estate Agent, Former Mayor Robert Pinkerton Jr, Fishing’s Future Founder Shane Wilson, City Secretary Nikki Soto, City Director of Operations/Deputy City Manager Wendi Delgado, City Attorney Ed Cyganiewicz, along with City Council members Ken Medders and Kerry Schwartz. The committee is set to convene for its inaugural meeting in April, with the specific date yet to be determined.

6.3

Council approved a Beach and Dune application for 7000 Gulf Boulevard, the location of Parkshore Condominiums. This approval enables the condominium to proceed with the construction of a 49-foot ramp, facilitating easier beach access for both guests and property owners.

6.4

Council approved renovations for Beach Access #16, also known as Neptune’s Circle. The approved plans involve expanding the parking lot, installing a permanent restroom, and adding a ramp for improved beach access.

6.6

The City Council approved the submission of a grant application to the Office of the Texas Governor Homeland Security Grants Division for the Statewide Emergency Radio Infrastructure Grant. Police Chief Claudine O’Carroll highlighted that the current radio system is outdated, emphasizing that the grant is essential for replacing the existing system.

6.7

Council granted approval to purchase multiple blocks of land for additional beach access and expanded parking areas. This move augmented the city budget by $350,000 and signals a commitment to shaping the future of South Padre Island by seeking opportunities for expansion.
