Owner of Breakaway Cruises and Bryant Industrial Services, SPI Chamber Board member, and Director Operations Mack Daniel Bryant elaborated on the organization's challenges in securing permits for deployment activities, highlighting a two-year wait period. However, there is optimism for deployments this summer, with potential benefits ranging from enhanced marine ecosystems to economic growth through increased fishing opportunities and job creation.
Concerns regarding access to fishing areas, particularly amidst closures in federal waters, were raised, underscoring the importance of initiatives like Fish Attracting Devices (FADs).
Economic Development Corp. member Gayle Hood requested Bryant to expand on the advocated development and deployment of FADs to bolster fishing prospects. Bryant noted the success of similar structures in various coastal communities worldwide, indicating potential fishing and boating benefits for South Padre Island.
"It brings fish to cook, it brings jobs, it brings boats to fish. Its not a desert out there to try to go fish. It's an economic engine," said Bryant.
