Special Events Committee Notes May 22

The Special Events Committee convened for its monthly meeting to discuss featured events and review other upcoming events on the island for the rest of 2024. Notably, the committee re-elected Christian Hasbun as Chairman and appointed Meg Clifton as Vice-Chairman.

The Wahoo Classic, taking place Sept. 6 – 8 at “The Greens” on Laguna Blvd, was granted $4,000 by the committee for marketing purposes. This will be the 8th Wahoo Classic, with representatives of the event saying they are expecting over 50 boats to participate, and prizes with a value of over $36,000. A new event called, "Make-A-Wish Rio Grande Valley" is coming to South Padre Island to host an event called 'Wine for Wishes' on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 6 – 9 p.m., at “The Greens” on Laguna Blvd. The foundation expects 750-1000 attendees and aims to increase exposure for Cameron County and South Padre Island. The committee granted $10,000 for marketing this first-time event.

The 8th annual Ride for Rotary Cruising the Causeway event will be on Oct. 8. Ride for Rotary is a bicycle event in which riders start at the Brownsville Event Center, ride through Los Fresnos, continuing over the Queen Isabella Causeway, and end at Louie’s Backyard. The events committee granted $2,500 for marketing purposes and members hope to use that money to increase the 70 total riders who participated in 2023.

Beer, Margarita, and Tacos are all rewards for participating in the SPI Musicians Run. Holding its sixth event on November 2nd, there will be 1k, 5k, and 10k options for runners to choose from while celebrating Mexican culture. After the event, enjoy a taco and either a beer or margarita to commemorate your running prowess. There will be a special Day of the Dead theme celebrating el Día de los Muertos. The committee granted $10,000 for marketing purposes. Member Christian Hasbun stressed more sponsorships for the event, specifically with the Tequila and Beer as a way to grow the event.
