As summer approaches and many families plan vacations to South Padre Island, rising bacterial levels in the ocean could become a concern.
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) operates a marine lab at South Padre Island, testing bacterial levels in the water throughout the island. The bacterial levels near any location on the island can be determined. The bacterial levels identified by the marine lab generated by General Land Office (GLO).
These levels were posted on May 28th. CFU stands for Colonizing Forming Units, a fancy way of saying bacteria that have been identified. Under 35 CFU is low, 35-104 is medium, and over 104 is high.
