by Sarah-Victoria Lozano de Gonzalez

A La Villa school board member, Yesenia Morales was arrested last week following a bar fight at the Isla Grand Beach Resort on South Padre Island on May 18 around 1:35 p.m.

Officials from Rio Grande Valley school districts convened at the Isla Grand for a two-day conference starting on May 17 organized by the Region One Education Service Center. However, in the early hours of May 18, a bar altercation disrupted the event.

At 1:35 a.m., the South Padre Island Police Department responded to reports of a "physical disturbance between a male and female subject in the bar area of the hotel," according to a summary of the incident released under the Texas Public Information Act to CBS 4 News. "Both subjects had been involved in physical fights and were placed under arrest for public intoxication."

Police charged La Villa school board Trustee Yesenia Morales and Andres Roberto Garza, 37, of La Villa with public intoxication, a Class C misdemeanor. According to Valley Central Morales and Garza reportedly share the same address.

The police report does not detail what triggered the altercation, the nature of the relationship between Morales and Garza, or the specific reasons officers determined they were intoxicated.

Morales, in a text message, mentioned she was "dealing with a family emergency" and was unavailable for comment to CBS 4 News.

It remains unclear if Morales participated in the conference, which featured sessions on school finance, Texas Education Agency investigations, and public information requests.

The La Villa Independent School District has not responded to requests for comment to CBS 4 News.
