The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s marine labs conduct weekly bacterial level readings during the summer to ensure the safety of residents and tourists who want to enjoy the ocean. The General Land Office (GLO) generated the bacterial levels the marine lab identified.
The posted levels are for the week of June 24th. CFU stands for Colonizing Forming Units, a fancy way of saying bacteria that have been identified. Under 35, CFU is low, 35-104 is medium, and over 104 is high. Anything over 104 CFU is considered unsafe water.
