El Paseo Arts Foundation holds auditions

El Paseo Arts Foundation [EPAF] will hold auditions for Theresa Reback’s comedy Dead Accounts at the South Padre Island Community Center on Saturday, Aug. 24 at 11 a.m.

The cast of five includes parts for three women and two men.

The plot follows Jack who has been working as a banker in New York City as he returns to his home in Cincinnati, Ohio. His sister Lorna, his mother, Barbara, and his high school friend, Phil, welcome him. His father lies ill in an upstairs bedroom. Jack’s unexpected return throws his family into a frenzy.

His sister Lorna needs answers: Is he coming home or running away? Where is his wife, Jenny, whom everyone hates? And how did he get all that money?

When his wife Jenny arrives, audiences learn about his $27-million-dollar secret and realize that the truth can be complicated.

Theresa Rebeck’s comedy tackles the timely issues of corporate greed, small town values and whether or not families will always welcome its members back with no questions asked.

JoAnn Evans, EPAF president and founder, will direct Dead Accounts.

There is no need to prepare anything for the auditions.  Auditioners will be asked to read from the script.

 Rehearsals begin on Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2024.  Performances are scheduled for Oct. 9, 10, 11 & 12, 2024.

EPAF will also hold auditions for Carole Caplan Lonner’s musical comedy The Kids Left. The Dog Died. Now What? on Friday, Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 31 at 11 a.m. at the SPI Community Center.

According to theatrical company Concord Theatricals, The Kids Left. The Dog Died. Now What? “salutes those valiantly struggling with divorce on their hands, gravity on their bodies, grandchildren on their self-images and the dating scene on their egos. The risks and uncertainties of being alive come alive through song and scene.”

The story centers around the modern-day idea of a “mid-life crisis,” taking a heartfelt approach to “empty-nest” syndrome. It touches on retirement, AARP, dating, divorce, plastic surgery and grandparenting.

EPAF is looking for four volunteer actors/actresses to make up the cast, two females and two males. All characters in this production are over the age of 40.

Those auditioning are asked to prepare a song to sing acapella or to a soundtrack they must provide.

It will hit the stage at the SPI Convention Center Nov. 4, 5 & 6 and will be directed by EPAF’s Julie Boughter.

This musical first premiered at the New York Musical Theatre Festival in 2007.

Stage Door Magazine in Philadelphia calls this production, “Just plain fun... Those of us who are empty-nesters know exactly what she is talking about!”

Backstage Magazine describes it as “A sincere, mostly lighthearted package of songs and skits about living and living it up as one's senior years get nearer, from growing dependence on doctors to late-blooming romance.”
