Throughout her career, she has worked with over 4,000 families in various settings, including primary care and intensive care, bringing expertise in child behavior, development, parenting, and mental health.
During her years at a safety-net hospital in Flint, MI, Dr. Cederna not only provided direct care but also trained pediatric residents, psychology fellows, and other clinicians—helping shape the next generation of healthcare providers. Her dedication to teaching and scholarship is reflected in 60 national peer-reviewed presentations, publications, statewide interprofessional trainings, and televised interviews within her areas of expertise.
In 2023, Dr. Cederna transitioned to an academic role as an Associate Professor in the Charles Stewart Mott Department of Public Health at Michigan State University. Most recently, Dr. Cederna was awarded $249,984 by the Michigan Health Endowment Fund to support a 2-year community-based program called "Project THRIVE: Thriving, Healing, and Replenishing Intervention in Everyday Life for Flint teens and their families."
Beyond her university position, Dr. Cederna also runs a direct-to-families behavioral health consultation practice (Best You Consulting, LLC) and an organizational consulting business (Cederna Consulting, PLLC). She works with families preventively to promote health and address subclinical behavioral health challenges, as well as with organizations looking to strengthen their behavioral health reach, effectiveness, and community engagement.
Dr. Cederna melds intellectual and creative passions through an active family-first Instagram account @DrCedernaConsulting. In her personal life, she keeps herself and her family well by engaging in Michigan's seasonal sports (e.g., swimming, downhill skiing, hiking). She values meaningful experiences shared with friends and family including her father, "Barber Tom" of Ann Arbor's The Hair Spot, time in nature, traveling, and trying new cuisines and activities. Last summer, she had the pleasure of embarking on a 3-country, 5-stop European adventure with her sister, where they enjoyed all of the local culture, cuisine, and sites - Munich, Germany, and the Algarve Coast of Portugal left the biggest impression!

Practical Tips for Therapeutic Change |
Chi Gung, Tai Chi and Related Practices by Dr. Lawrence Perlman
Attendees at our first webinar expressed interest in learning about Tai Chi Chuan for its health benefits. Here is some background regarding Tai Chi and related practices derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). All of them are based on procedures that promote the unimpeded flow of Chi, which is the life energy. Acupuncture and acupressure act on nodal points in the energy meridians where Chi is blocked. For those who are starting out, it is good to begin with Chi Gung. In the early morning, you'll frequently see older Chinese people doing these exercises outdoors near areas where they live. Sometimes these people will exaggerate their breathing, make loud sounds, or strike their bodies. Chi Gung takes many forms. Each person has their own routine. There are standard groups of exercises that are all called the 18 Therapies. I've been doing one version of them every morning for 40 years for their health benefits. They teach balance, breathing, stretching, how to shift weight, etc. They are used as warm-up exercises prior to doing the Tai Chi forms, which I will briefly describe.
The Chi Gong movements are the vocabulary that comprise the Tai Chi forms. The forms (called "katas" in other Asian martial arts) are structured sequences of movements that have colorful Chinese names (part the wild horse’s mane, white crane spreads wings, single whip, carry tiger to mountain, wave hands like clouds, pick up needle at sea bottom, etc. There are five lineages or families of Tai Chi and each has its own forms with different variations on movements that have identical names. The most common styles are Yang, Sun, Wu, and Chen.
In recent years immigrants from the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) have brought mashups of these forms that are often identified by their number of movements: 24, 48, 56, 88. All are multiples of 8 which is considered a lucky number in China. It's particularly common to see these combined forms in NYC where I learned Tai Chi.
If you see a group of people doing Tai Chi in a park or other public space, it’s often permissible to join in. Many of these people are happy to share their expertise with you and will invite you to follow what they are doing. Tai Chi practitioners are generally quite welcoming. Some might correct your movements and emphasize the fundamentals of Tai Chi. |

Research Study on Interoception |
We are a small group of interdisciplinary therapists doing a study of therapists and educators who use interoception in their work, whether formally or informally. Interoception is a person's knowing what they feel, physically or emotionally. Our study aims to better understand therapists’ and educators' experiences at facilitating interoception in clients or students. We wish to bring together insights from different disciplines to build a more integrated understanding of interoception as it relates to therapeutic intervention, to inform training, to support practitioners and to generate questions for further research. The study involves a 20-minute online survey with Survey Monkey. Participation is voluntary. The study has IRB approval via Fielding Graduate University. If you have questions about the study or survey, please email us at interoceptivepractice@gmail.com.
Here is the link for completing the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NJ2G6J8

Integrative Psychotherapy Discussion-Consultation group |
Join me to learn new approaches to psychotherapy while integrating them with the best of traditional methods.
I am a clinical psychologist, psychoanalyst, and scholar of the psychotherapy integration movement. This group is designed for therapists with any theoretical background. My original training was psychodynamic so I can help students who come from that approach to understand their cases more deeply.
As a participant in the psychotherapy integration movement I am interested in finding ways to integrate aspects of contemporary treatment approaches, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing.
Possible topics for this fall will include recent developments in psychoanalysis, CBT and other therapies; challenges to the working alliance; common factors in treatment; countertransference pitfalls; and ethical issues regarding therapist illness or death.
The group will run for eight weeks beginning October 14, 2025, on Tuesdays, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (We will skip the meeting on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.)
The cost is $600 per person ($75 per session) for a minimum of six people. I can accommodate six people in-person at my downtown Ann Arbor office, and there will also be a hybrid option for those out of town.
To join the group, email me: rcohen1101@gmail.com
