WPS November Newsletter

Dear Colleagues,

We are very pleased with the response to our latest webinar, Behind the Silence: Understanding Men’s Hidden Struggles. Attendees gave Dr. Douglas Carpenter high grades for practical suggestions based on his many years of experience with men's issues. Many were impressed by his courage and candor in self-revelations that reinforced his insights into the subject. The wordcloud below was generated from their reviews.

As a reminder, WPS does not schedule webinars in December. We look forward to continue platforming excellent educational content in 2026.

Happy Holidays,

Stefan Petrmichl and the WPS Board.

Member Spotlight: Evelyn Foreman, MA

Evelyn Foreman’s path to psychology began with a deep passion for understanding and
supporting children. As an undergraduate at Lemoyne-Owen College, she pursued a minor in psychology to enhance her teaching skills. Her advisor, Dr. H. Andersen, encouraged her to major in psychology instead, recognizing her natural empathy and insight.

Yet growing up in Memphis, Tennessee, during the 1960s, Evelyn had doubts that diversity, equity, and inclusion would provide her a fair chance to pursue a career in psychology. After earning her master’s degree in Educational Psychology in the 1970s, Evelyn’s career took a new direction when a teacher’s strike in Chicago led her to the Bobby Wright Comprehensive Community Mental Health Center. There, under the mentorship of Dr. Wright, she worked as a Psychologist II in the Developmental Disabilities Program, marking the start of a long and meaningful mental health career. She later served as a child psychotherapist and clinical team leader for emotionally disturbed children, while continuing advanced coursework and training through several Chicago institutions.

Returning to Detroit in 1984, Evelyn continued expanding her activities in the field. She worked as a court psychologist at the Wayne County Juvenile Court Clinic, providing crisis intervention, psychological assessments, and outpatient psychotherapy. Following that, she took on challenging roles as the Outpatient Director of Diversified Youth Services at Henry Ford Hospital and also worked for Wayne County Community Mental Health. She later established her own private practice after earning a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Mercy College of Detroit in 1990.

Evelyn eventually returned to education, bringing her mental health expertise to the classroom. Despite taking on a challenging position, she thrived and made a lasting difference for her students. Her excellence was recognized through multiple honors, including the Golden Apple Award from Wayne Regional Educational Service Agency and Ford Motor Company, and nomination from the Detroit Board of Education for Michigan Teacher of the Year.

Today, Evelyn remains deeply involved in her community as a block captain for over 25 years and an elected precinct delegate from 2016–2026. Her advocacy helped inspire a new Detroit citywide ordinance. She earned the Spirit of Detroit Award in 2008 and the Maurice Sugar Law Center Award for Economic and Social Justice in 2011.

Outside of work, Evelyn enjoys traveling and hopes to visit every state in the U.S., inspired by her love of learning and exploration. As the first college graduate in her family, she has built a legacy defined by service, resilience, and lifelong dedication to education and mental health.
