May GMM - What you missed!

The March general membership meeting (GMM) was held at Bento Kitchen Cravings on 5/21/19. We were graciously welcomed by the staff at Bento Kitchen and were even given complimentary spring rolls! We would definitely recommend paying them a visit for a meal soon.

Lysne Tait from Helping Women Period attended the GMM to share her organization's mission with our members. Helping Women Period is a non-profit organization that distributes free menstrual products to homeless, low-income, and refugee menstruators. They also provide education on menstruation and menstrual products in order to increase awareness and openness while reducing stigma.

You can assist Helping Women Period by donating money, products, or time. Visit them at helpingwomenperiod.org or on Facebook for more information!

Save the date for our Summer Picnic!

In lieu of a traditional GMM, we will have a picnic on July 16th at Patriarche Park in East Lansing. The BOD is still working out the details on food, but we invite you to mark your calendars now. Partners, kiddos, and friends are all welcome to come join in the festivities. We would love to see you there!

Member Spotlight - Emily Lawler

Where do you live and work? I live in Lansing's beautiful Westside neighborhood and work downtown covering politics for MLive.com.

How long have you been a Jaycee? I just joined in January.

What is your most memorable Jaycees moment? I really liked going to Ele's Place when we volunteered to make dinner. The work they do there is so inspiring and touches so many families in the area.

What is your favorite JCI project? To be determined! I'm excited to go through a full year of the marquee events, something tells me I'll love stuffing the bus.

Tell us about your family and pets. My husband and I have two cats -- Maverick and Goose. Yeah, they're Top Gun cats.

What are the top three highlights of your life? Our wedding, the best stories I've written and our globetrotting. In the last three years, we've been to Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Hungary, Austria, Mexico and Canada. Germany is next on our list.

What is your favorite board or card game? Settlers of Catan

What's the worst thing you did as a kid and did you get caught? Skipped math class in 4th grade to climb over bathroom stalls. Made a ton of noise with my best friend, and we definitely got caught. We cracked immediately and confessed everything.

What are you looking forward to in the next year? My next big story, always.

What song always puts you in a good mood? "You can call me Al" by Paul Simon

What is your favorite vacation spot? The next one! It's hard for me to beat the UP in the summer, though. I jumped off the Black Rocks in Marquette last fall and can't wait to do it again.

What advice do you wish you were told your first day as a Jaycee? I'm still new, so I'm still looking for all the advice I can get!
