UPDATE: COVID-19 Testing
23/4/2020
A poorly written paragraph in yesterday’s Island Matters left the impression that there was a 10-minute break in the City Council meeting to confer with the Cameron County Health Department. This reporter made that 10-minute call after the Council meeting.
Since then, we've learned that South Padre Island does have testing available for COVID-19, but the Cameron County Health Department statistics are still correct. There are no positive tests on the island.
"We haven't had any positives…and now anyone who wants to be tested can be," says Dr. Joe Ybarra, from Dr. Ybarra’s Private Practice and Wellness Center.
For island residents who use the SPI Clinic, there are no on-island tests. “If anyone thinks they may have (COVID-19), we refer them to the Brownsville office,” said Mrs. Longoria, a nurse from the SPI Clinic.
