What happened: City Council passed a motion to suspend all beach permits until April 15, 2021, to cover Spring Break and the Easter holiday.
"I was asked to put this on the agenda because it's time for people to start planning or not planning what to do for spring break," said Mayor Patrick McNulty.
McNulty added that there had yet to be a vaccine, and universities have canceled their spring breaks, "It kind of lets everybody know that they don't need to be planning for something. I don't see how we can do it safely at this time."
Why it matters: There will be no special events held on the beach during the Spring Break, Easter, and Semana Santa season. As many universities cancel spring break, our beaches, restaurants, and amenities will be open to residents and property owners for the first time in decades. It may be years until it happens again, so this is the time to plan to be on the island for your family spring break!
What now: The beach is still open to the public under restrictions set by the City.
