What happened:

Chair Virginia Guillot and Vice Chair Rob Nixon retained their current seats with a unanimous vote.

The task force prepared topics for discussion on beach rules and regulations in their upcoming joint workshop meeting with City Council and local stakeholders.  This discussion was said to cover not only COVID-19 but the future of beaches on South Padre Island.

In response to the lengthy conversation, the task force decided to leave the rest of the discussion for the future workshop.  The task force also suggested that the City Council and Shoreline Department have a workshop first.

Later, Vice-Chair Rob Nixon made a motion to address the existing issues before moving forward, "I would make a motion that we address the six issues that are already on the books (city ordinances) before we move on to anything else on the workshop."

Beach Rules:

No overnight camping

No glass containers

No litter

Leash and clean up after your pets

No commercial activity or solicitation

No shade devices between the hours of 10 pm-9 am

Second Amended Emergency Management Order Regarding Beach Operations

Why it matters:

Possible discussion topics mentioned at the meeting were fireworks, fire, grilling, amplified music, commercial activity, surfing, fishing, digging holes, and alcohol.

What now:

The workshop date is TBA, and the next Shoreline Task Force board meeting will be on January 26, 2021.
