Staff promotions:
In the last City Council meeting, Police Chief Claudine O'Carroll appointed the title 'Community Resource officer' to Joseph Gonzalez. He has been serving the SPI police force since 2009 after finishing seven years in the U.S Army as a military police officer. "This position is to serve as a liaison between the police department and the community to enrich our area with local programs that will benefit from collaboration with the police department," said O'Carroll.
Alongside Gonzalez's new position, Ocean Rescue Lifeguard Pedro Casillas also accepted his promotion as Ocean Rescue Lieutenant. Fire Chief Jim Pigg recognized Casillas for his hard work and dedication to the city, "Pedro has been working for the city since 2014. Recently he became a firefighter for the city of SPI and is also in the paramedic program."
SPI Hospital:
In a presentation regarding South Padre Island Hospital, Dr. Ybarra announced that the plans are back on track after a delay due to the ongoing pandemic and a property location change. "The initial property that we had, which was directly across the street from the fire station, has now been exchanged for the one just north of the property. Instead of 1.2 acres, we have 1.8." He also mentioned recruitment of surgeons from the Brownsville Harlingen area and a hope to break ground in the next three months."
