“Y.O.U. Your Own Unique Design” Joins SPI Chamber of Commerce Originally from East Texas, Artist Sherre Adams rediscovered her love for art after moving to South Padre Island 4 years ago.
Adams fixated on art from childhood, “Since I was little, I was always drawing, but I was never really good at painting.” Despite not being a painter, after vacationing on SPI, she took another crack at painting when she volunteered to paint a piece as a gift for a friend.
A turning point in Adam’s newfound career came from being on the Island in what she described as a time of “peace and tranquility.”
Since that moment, it kicked off what she says is the “most fun career I’ve ever had,” after working in several different fields. “I worked in an office for ten years, and I was a cook, which was my first passion. Soon after, I wanted to own a restaurant, and I started a cleaning company.”

They gave me a scholarship fully paid for the year. I started here, I started keeping the shop open, teaching classes, and just continued to learn and grow,” said Adams.
After asking Adams what her specialty art was, she responded, “Everything honestly. I feel like in art, and also in life, you should not limit yourself. If you’re able to do it, then you should do whatever it is.”
After dabbling in many art mediums, she added, “That’s why I’m into ceramics. I’m into acrylics. I’m into taking those pieces and trying to collaborate them. Always just trying different things.”
Adams says she still remembers the specific moment she realized that art can be a career after living in Brownsville for almost a year. “When I was living in Brownsville painting on the seashells and sea creatures, I came up with the idea of having it in a souvenir shop. What better way than to take the Island with them but also take art? You’re taking a piece of the Island with you, and it’s a good memory. That’s when I knew what I wanted to do.”
She added, “It brings me so much joy to do this. Whenever I see someone’s face light up over a piece that they have gotten from me or something they see. They know I’ve used my imagination, and it touches them. That’s my joy.” (Pictured: Acrylic pours) Adams welcomes art classes to people of all ages and walks of life, “Those who are intimidated should not be intimated because art is love. It’s life, and it’s free-flowing.” (Image above, acrylic pour dishes) All about the classes Join Y.O.U Your Own Unique Design at her ribbon cutting on May 20 at 5:30pm How to sign up for classes: Coming up: The City of South Padre Island's Skate Park is Now Open Photo: City of South Padre Island
