ABI Welcomes Printmaking and Illustrator Cristina Piecuch (Pictured: Cristina Piecuch)
Originally from Peru, Artist Cristina Piecuch moved to South Padre Island in January and quickly made her way into the Art Incubator Business program as a printmaker and illustrator.
Having a natural knack since childhood for art, Piecuch took as many art classes as an adolescent in Peru and AP art classes in high school after she moved back to the US. “Ever since I was little, I was into art, art classes, just doing as much as I can do whenever I had any sort of school assignment. So I took as many art classes as I possibly could in middle school and high school.” “There’s not a lot of printmakers around here,” said Piecuch, which is a part of the reason Piecuch stood out as the last applicant chosen. “I think what they liked was that I had a variety of work. I worked in printmaking (carving pictured on the right), but I also do digital illustrations. Some of my digital work had space themes,” seen as an opportunity to partner with SpaceX. Piecuch’s business plan is to seek to provide services to local businesses and create a digital coworking space for artists. “My initial plan was not necessarily creating a physical space but more with just working with businesses around here, and to use my skill set of design and illustration with a local business. (On left, Digital work by Cristina Piecuch) Though she admits, “After being here for a while, I was thinking a lot about studio space for printmakers, there’s not a lot of printmakers around here,” but mentions there’s no space for them, “there’s not a lot of studio space for printmakers besides the university (UTRGV).”
As she continues evolving her plans, she’s still looking forward to working with businesses, “I’m still interested in working with businesses around here, especially these two shows we’re doing with the turtle and birding center. I like working with organizations that focus on nature and conservation.”
Recently, she says, “I’ve been focusing a lot on the birds and plants. I’ve been doing a lot of pieces on the animals of the island or the birds that we see. It’s just so beautiful. I’m not used to seeing such a diversity of birds, especially because this is a hub of migration. It’s crazy to see diversity all year round.”
