The Islander: Andrew Infante Andrew Martin Infante is getting an early start in announcing his plans to run for Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1, in Cameron County. Infante, a Port Isabel native, plans to run as a Republican in the 2022 race for the office currently held by Benito Ochoa IV. The 28-year-old is a business owner who started Rip Current Athletics in Port Isbel soon after receiving an undergraduate degree in kinesiology from Texas A&M University.
Why Run? Infante said it's time for his generation to step up and become more involved in public service. “We're having issues where we have a lot of mandated laws that are not being followed or they’re overstepping boundaries,” he said of the current administration. “So that is something I want to be a part of to make sure that that does not happen.”
Goals Infante said he will seek to establish strong relationships with law enforcement agencies and restore confidence in the office of the justice of the peace.
Infante said there are several issues he plans to address if he is elected. He said law enforcement on the Island should be more stringent in issuing traffic citations where applicable.
"It's gotten busier here, and more people are coming and visiting our high traffic area, and there's no correlation with the number of stops and tickets," he said.
Infante said a justice of the peace should enforce laws properly in assessing the appropriate judgments and fines. Revenues from traffic tickets help fund county and local law enforcement, he said, such as constable offices.
Another issue mentioned by Infante was repeat offenders and the need to apply the law evenly.
"Here in this town, we have issues like 'that's my cousin, that's my friend, so I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt,’ while others have no mercy,’’ he said. "You know the tendencies for them to do the wrong thing, but you still let them off the hook. This affects people sometimes, but it's the price that you pay for the mistake that you made.’’
Early Election Announcement Infante is starting early because he wants to get the word out that voters will have a choice this time around.
"I'm ready to step up and get this thing done the right way for the community,” he said. “This is a leadership position, and we have to have people stepping up and do the right thing.” “You have to show from day one that you're doing the right thing for the people that you represent, and if it is done in self-interest and not self-less service, that's not done with integrity. Then you're not doing the right thing when nobody's looking. You're doing the right thing for a picture on social media.”
