The Islander: Healthcare Administrator Hector Ramos Healthcare administrator Hector Ramos has witnessed his share of moving his whole life before settling down at his oceanfront property on South Padre Island. Starting his childhood in the Kingsville area, where he lived till he was about ten years old, he and his family moved quite a bit, since his father was a state trooper.
Graduating from Harlingen High School, Ramos’s future had a hold on him from a young age. At the age of 14, Ramos volunteered as a candy striper at the local hospital, and at 15, he helped out EMS services by cleaning and washing out ambulances. When he was 16, Ramos became a dispatcher for EMS, before becoming an EMT. All the previous steps led him to become a paramedic and then join the military.
After serving in the military with a natural pull to health and service, Ramos attended nursing school in Seattle. What brought him back to the Valley was his mother, who became ill, and a son who knew how to care for her. Photo of Hector Ramos at 19 years old in 1990. Starting as an ER Nurse, eventually making his way to his administrative position, Ramos, while living in the Valley, taught at the University of Texas at Brownsville and did a lot of higher education teaching in the nursing profession.
“I do all the administrative work for all of our practices,” mentioning a clinics in Houston, Harlingen, and South Padre Island.
Ramos recalled meeting Dr. Ybarra in 1994 while working with him in the ER. Soon projects would pull him back to the Valley, specifically the island, where he has resided for the past three years. Ramos sees this as a blessing, since he loves the water and has always dreamed of owning oceanfront property. Ramos says his favorite part of the island is the feeling of the show “Cheers” where “Everybody knows your name. Everybody seems to want to help each other out. As a business owner, it’s awesome that you are helpful with each other. It’s been great. I have never been a part of the community that was so tight knit. That’s what I like about it." He and Dr. Ybarra envision more access to care so that others without insurance don’t starve themselves from doctor visits. He hopes to call themselves a population health facility, instead of a clinic, in the future.
Excited for the future, Ramos is open to many things to better the community. He has told City Council members that he is willing to serve, if any committees come up that are healthcare-related. In his free time, he loves to travel and enjoys coming back from vacation to his home ‘vacation.’ Four items on his travel list are singing karaoke, watching his favorite Houston sports teams play, eating at featured restaurants on tv, and playing competitive chess in a distant chess club with his daughter.
