This webinar uses descriptions, videos, and discussions to address several communication difficulties common among echolalic autistic children. Following a brief overview of echolalia and some earlier communication interventions, the webinar will focus mainly on specific ways to help echolalic learners to:

  • Use “I/me/my” for self-reference

  • Answer and ask Wh and yes/no questions

  • Engage effectively in conversation

Participants will be able to: 

1. Describe a functional communication process for increasing self-generated language while decreasing echolalia

2. Explain the use of language modeling to decrease pronoun reversal and establish the use of “I/me/my” for self-reference

3. List three activities for teaching echolalic children to answer or ask questions.

Management of Cognitive-Communication Disorders in Post-COVID-19 Patients presented by Rebecca Boersma, M.A., CCC-SLP, George Washington University Hospital, Outpatient Rehabilitation Center.

This session reviews the emerging evidence of neurological manifestations of COVID-19 and identifies how SLPs can use their unique position to maximize patient outcomes—whether as a member of an interdisciplinary team or as a solo provider. A Holistic Approach to Childhood Onset Fluency Disorder, presented by Megan MacPherson, Ph.D., CCC-SLP. This course will present recent advancements in the area of Childhood Onset Fluency Disorder (COFD; developmental stuttering) and the essential elements of a multifactorial and holistic approach to working with COFD. This approach is then applied to the assessment and treatment of COFD.

Reponsive Feeding: supporting Parents in Establishing a Strong Foundation of Healthy Oral Intake for the Young Child presented by Laurie Bahlke, M.A., CCC-SLP and Lexis Landis, M.A., CCC-SLP. This presentation will focus on providing participants with information on Complementary Feeding and the association to Responsive Feeding that when coupled with parent coaching and education on developmental growth and feeding milestones, can improve feeding outcomes, parental satisfaction within the feeding context and improve overall health in the young child.
