This course of instruction provides the experienced detective or crime scene investigator with the skills necessary to recognize and properly document the unique attributes of a shooting scene, the dynamic relationship between the scene and the injuries received by the victim(s), as well as the analytical skills necessary to reconstruct the scene to potentially determine position of shooter(s), victim(s) and critical evidence as well as sequence of events.  These skills may be employed during active investigations to determine the likely sequence of events and positions to analyze victim, witness and shooter statements to determine veracity and develop investigative leads as well as to develop a product and basis for testimony during criminal or civil judicial proceedings.
 
TERMINAL PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE: The investigator, when presented with a shooting scene, will be able to properly document the scene for evidence of firearms discharge, bullet impacts, and wound dynamics on victims for analysis and reconstruction of the dynamic events to include victim position, shooter position, range of fire, trajectories and indications of dynamic movement during the incident.
 
ENABLING PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:
EPO #1:  Identify the types of firearms and ammunition commonly encountered during criminal investigations, their basic design parameters, and nomenclature.
EPO #2:  Identify and describe the basic trajectory characteristics of a projectile fired from gun and the projectiles stability during flight as they pertain to shooting incident reconstruction, bullet impacts, bullet holes and wound dynamics.
EPO #3:  Identify and describe the common characteristics associated with handgun and rifle projectiles as they relate to wound dynamics, distance to target, examination of clothing and other impacted surfaces.
EPO #4:  Identify and describe the common characteristics associated with shotgun projectiles as they relate to wound dynamics, distance to target, examination of clothing and other impacted surfaces.
EPO#5:  Demonstrate the ability to perform trajectory computations and illustration through the application of trigonometric calculations and implementation of rods, stringing and use of laser lights.
EPO #6:  Demonstrate the ability to evaluate a surface and defect to determine if it is suitable for trajectory analysis as well as being able to identify ricochets and their relationship to the scene.
EPO #7:  Identify and demonstrate the use of the scientific method in original experimentation design as well as in analysis/reconstruction of a shooting incident.
EPO #8:  Identify and demonstrate event sequence analysis as it pertains to reconstruction/analysis.
 
METHOD OF EVALUATION: Students will be evaluated through their ability to articulate an oral defense of their findings from a practical exercise as well as through a written examination.
 
STUDENT SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Students should bring clothing appropriate for both classroom and range environments.
Standing, kneeling, bending and lifting items up to 35 pounds are required throughout the laboratory portions of this class.
Exercises will be conducted at a firing range, students should bring personal eye protection and hearing protection.

Our UK Level 2 BPA / BASIC (40-hour) Bloodstain Pattern Analysis course is a RESIDENTIAL training course targeted at Law Enforcement Personnel, Crime Scene Investigators, Forensic Scientists and other selected individuals who examine bloodstain patterns at scenes and on weapons and clothing and want to develop a fundamental knowledge of the science and techniques of BPA in the investigation of crime. The training uses classroom-based presentations to deliver teaching across 7 modules which address a wide range of topics from the historical basis of BPA to blood dynamics and stain classification. These are supported by practical (wet-room) sessions along with instructor demonstrations, syndicate exercises and individual practical assessments. Participants are required to undertake an assessment, for which feedback will be provided, and will receive a Training Manual and Certificate of Completion. Post-course mentoring can be developed following consultation with the participant and their agency. Animal-derived blood and pork meat is used during the training session.
 

Instructors

The course instructors are internationally recognised BPA experts with a rich forensic and crime scene expertise and each have extensive operational experience in a range of related forensic disciplines including giving expert testimony in national and international courts of law. The training courses are delivered by Jo Millington and Gillian Leak. Jo and Gillian have a combined experience of ~ 70 years working in the UK forensic science industry and both have extensive experience in the multi-disciplinary forensic investigation of major and critical incidents. They have delivered professional BPA training to crime scene and laboratory-based practitioners from around the world. Other instructors join this course during the week as part of the Spatter/ED team.

The course will assist crime scene investigators in the documentation, the interpretation the evaluation of bloodstain patterns as can be found in crime scene cases. Topics will include physics of bloodstain formation, event analysis, report preparation, and court presentation techniques as will be trained in a mock court session.

Successful completion of the course will furthermore require a series of  scientific articles to be studied prior to the course. The articles will be supplied a few weeks before the course.

Preparing and giving a presentation during the course about a topic to be selected by the trainers before course starts.

Content

This hands-on practical course (40 hours duration) is designed for investigators, crime scene technicians, forensic analysts, and others involved in criminal and medical-legal investigations and crime scene investigation.
The advanced course builds upon the basic principles and practical skills acquired in a IABPA- approved basic BPA Course. Completion of a basic course is therefore a prerequisite for attending this advance course. Knowledge acquired in the advanced course will allow for more complex applications of bloodstain pattern analysis.
 

During this advanced course we will focus on the documentation, interpretation and evaluation of bloodstain patterns as well as report preparation and court presentation.

The course includes instructions on the following subjects:

• Bloodstain Pattern terminology and identification (review)
• Physics of bloodstain formation
• Documentation requirements
• Determination of the area of origin (review) by the use of HemoSpat software
• Conclusion drawing, reporting, and peer review
• Reconstruction
• Courtroom presentations and expert testimony (competed with a mock court session)

During the course several moments knowledge and ability are demonstrated by the participants through tests and presentations.

Goal

Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:

• Relate characteristics of bloodstain pattern types to the mechanism of stain production.
• Demonstrate the methodology of BPA within the context of the overall scene.
• Demonstrate the ability to use various methods to establish the area of origin of an impact pattern and discuss their limitations.
• Demonstrate the ability to evaluate bloodstain patterns on different objects and surfaces as seen in crime scenes.
• Formulate bloodstain pattern evidence into a report format which complies with scientific and jurisdictional standards.
• Demonstrate the ability to review another analyst’s work (technical and administrative review).
• Demonstrate the ability to evaluate complex bloodstain pattern scenes.
• Apply knowledge in presenting BPA expert-testimony in a courtroom.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the properties of blood and how they relate to bloodstain pattern analysis, particularly the physics of bloodstain formation.

Exam

The course is completed by a practical competency exam, which consists among others of a practical bloodstain case.

After the BPA Advanced training the participant must produce a BPA report of this case within 8 weeks. The trainers will look over this report (as  the result of the practical test) to check if the quality is sufficient to have proved BPA skills on the Advanced level.

You will pass the exam if you meet the requirements of the practical test, the mock court session, as well as the presentation on the given topic.

Our 5 day ( 40 hours) Basic Bloodstain Pattern Analysis Course is designed to give the participants a basic foundation on Bloodstain Pattern Analysis.  The focus of this intensive course is to provide the participants knowledge of Bloodstain Pattern Analysis through the application of concepts of biology, biochemistry, physics and mathematics to objectively define and reconstruct events associated in a bloodletting event. This training will give participants a unique opportunity to acquire first-hand knowledge of the bloodstain pattern analysis through lectures of theory, demonstrations and hand-on practical laboratory exercises.

This course will enhance basic skills and develop the novice to a core competency level required for independent analysis and will enhance the analyst skill in preparation of acceptance as an expert in the court room

The course of instruction is designed for investigators, crime scene technicians, forensic scientists, attorneys and medico-legal investigators. There is no minimum educational standard for those who decide to attend this course although we recommend at least 1 year field experience after successful completion of a basic 40-hour course.

• Analyse (complex) bloodstain pattern in several mock scenes.
• Clothing and drying times of blood.
• Sequencing.
• Problem solving by review of actual bloodletting cases.
• Utilizing Bloodstain Patterns to reconstruct past events.
• Approaching a Bloodstain Pattern case.
• Report writing.
• Designing Case Related Bloodstain Pattern Experiments ( scientific method).
• Limitations of bloodstain pattern analysis.
• Apply a scientific method to questioned stains.
• Expert Evidence.

Pre-Requisites:

Successful completion of a Basic Bloodstain Pattern Analysis course meeting the requirements of the IABPA basic course.

Class:

Maximum of 16 participants.

Visualization Of Latent Bloodstain Course ( 40 hours)

This course will provide the participants with first-hand knowledge of how and when to employ searching and enhancement techniques to visualize latent bloodstains. Students will acquire first-hand knowledge of the benefits as well as the limitations of commonly utilized chemical searching and enhancement techniques.

The course is divided into both lecture and laboratory sessions.  The theoretical and fundamental principles related to the chemical searching and enhancement techniques for latent bloodstains will be illustrated in the lecture segments. These principles will then be reinforced in the laboratory segments where students will have an opportunity to utilize the methods discussed in lecture.

Our 5 day ( 40 hours ) Bloodstain Pattern Analysis on Textile Course is designed to give the participants 40 hours of lectures, practical’s (experiments and mock scenes) to increase knowledge and skills on blood stain analysis on textile.

Examination of bloodstained clothing is a common request of the bloodstain pattern analyst. The analysis of this examination can potentially provide information regarding the movements and activities of the wearer during a bloodshed event and may confirm or refute testimonies for the presence of blood stain pattern on his or her clothing. To analyse these bloodstains correctly the analyst has to understand the scientific fundamentals involved in blood stain formation and its final appearance on textile.

This course is designed for all levels of law enforcement personnel, especially those who search for blood at scenes as well as on articles of physical evidence, investigators, crime scene personnel, attorneys, prosecutors, judges, medico legal investigators and participants studying forensics science and/or criminal justice.

• Fabrication of textile
• Scientific fundamentals involved in bloodstain formation and its final appearance on textile
