The name Imitations  implies a dialog where one voice leads and the other follows in imitation. In the first movement the structure is somewhat like a canon. The second movement has one voice playing the melody with the other voice accompanying, the voices switching parts every four measures. This pattern is repeated in the first section of the third movement, whereas the middle section is more compact in rhythm but less strict in tone imitation. After a repeat pf the first section, the primary motif is broken down into its parts (major-minor key) and then into fragments with the two instruments competing for primacy. Only on the final note are they unified.
