Assessment & Treatment Strategies for Low Functioning TBI Survivors

Event Description

Speaker: Kim Gully, MS, CCC, CCM, CBIST, is a speech language pathologist by profession who specializes in working with individuals who have sustained traumatic brain injuries, strokes, anoxic episodes and other neurological conditions. She's been a speech language pathologist since 1984, a certified case manager since 2005 and a certified brain injury specialist trainer since 2009. She retired in 2020 after enjoying a 35 year career as an executive director, therapist, case manager, support group leader, local/regional/national speaker, and brain injury advocate. She's currently working to advocate for individuals who need assistance navigating through the recovery process after a traumatic brain Injury. She runs a support group for brain injury survivors and caregivers and is the President of MSCC.
Course Description: This course is designed to address the unique needs of the slow to recover/low functioning traumatic brain injury patient. This population is frequently overlooked due the slow progression of their recovery, non-verbal status, ongoing medical complications and lack of therapist experience with this patient population. Assessment tools, treatment strategies and resources for families, caregivers and support staff members will be provided.

Objectives:
- Describe the different types of assessment tools used to identify progress in low functioning TBI survivors.
- Learn structured process to provide stimulation to low functioning TBI survivors and determine appropriate Rancho Level.
- Demonstrate ability to document medical necessity for providing interventions for low functioning TBI survivors.
- Locate TBI resources to provide educational information to families, caregivers and support system members.
