Event Description
Compassion fatigue is the result of burnout and secondary traumatic stress. It is like a disease: it’s contagious and you may not have the antibodies to combat it when it strikes. This brief overview will look at the causes and possible responses to exposure.

Facilitator:
Rev. Dr. Jeanne Kataoka (she/her/hers)
After becoming an ordained animal chaplain and while volunteering for a local animal shelter, Rev. Dr. Jeanne began to realize how pervasive compassion fatigue is in the animal shelter and veterinary arenas. It was then that she decided to become a Certified Compassion Fatigue Professional under the clergy designation. She has since come to understand that compassion fatigue plagues many if not all of the helping fields.

She continued her education and went on to receive her master’s and doctorate degrees in Humane Spiritual Studies and was ordained an interfaith minister all through Emerson. She is now on the faculty at Emerson as chair of the Humane Spiritual Studies Department.

She has been married to her husband, Mike, since 1976. They live in Moreno Valley, Calif. with three dogs, including one who was in a laboratory for 9½ years, and three cats, all rescued. They have two adult children.
