Aaron Rothbart, MS, CCC-SLP, is a doctoral student, pursuing clinical and research interests related to cognitive rehabilitation following acquired brain injury. Previously, he has worked in a variety of medical settings, including: acute, acute rehabilitation, transitional living and outpatient clinical services. Clinical specialties have centered around cognition, voice, dysarthria, aphasia and dysphagia. He has developed and led various groups ranging from individuals with Parkinson’s disease to caregiver support groups. He has served as a lead clinical researcher with investigations examining assistive technology and external stimulation in post-acute/chronic aphasia. He served on several district advisory boards and as a member of the ASHA TBI Topic Committee. Aaron has presented at both the state and national levels.

Course description: This presentation will introduce an expansive understanding of how cognition serves as an underlying deficit in nearly all acquired brain injuries; therefore, requiring clinicians to consider the identification of potentially subtle cognitive deficits, prioritization of cognition as a treatment target, and addressing cognition through a combination of neurobiological and compensatory means. The talk will emphasize how establishing an effective therapeutic alliance is an essential ingredient in recovery outcomes by implementing wholistic patient-centered care.
