Critical Awakening: Empowering Students through Critical Media Literacy |
Bruno Halpern |
Abstract |
This research paper delves into the theoretical underpinnings of critical media literacy (CML), underscoring its contemporary relevance and empowering potential for students in the digital age. As media consumption and production become increasingly pervasive, the need for a critical understanding of media messages and their societal implications has never been more pressing. This paper elucidates the role of CML in fostering informed, active participants in our media-saturated society. I argue that CML not only equips students with the tools to deconstruct media messages but also empowers them to become critical thinkers and creators of media. Drawing from a range of interdisciplinary literature, I discuss the theoretical foundations of CML, its societal importance and its empowering potential for students. Furthermore, the practical application of CML in higher education curricula will be explored. My analysis reveals that integrating CML into higher education can significantly enhance students' critical thinking skills and civic engagement. |
