A Didactic Explanation of Standards-based Grading |
Bo Zhang |
Abstract |
While standards-based grading has gained great popularity in schools, research on it is quite limited. Consequently, many current practices in standards-based grading are not substantiated by empirical evidence. Meanwhile, the coverage of standards-based grading is also limited in textbooks on classroom assessment. This writing aims to serve as a didactic guide for classroom teachers and researchers . The main focus is on how to conduct standards-based grading. This guide starts with the rationales for standards-based grading, then moves to its major components, and ends with a discussion of the challenges in using standards-based grading. Through this process, this guide also aims to clearly illustrate the difference between standards-based grading and the traditional point-based grading. |
