(St. Louis, MO, Jan. 25, 2024) The City of St. Louis has given Western Specialty Contractors - St. Louis Concrete Branch the green light to begin restoring the St. Louis Centre East parking garage amid public safety concerns.

Located at 400 North Sixth Street in Downtown St. Louis, the 40-year-old garage was exhibiting visible signs of deterioration, which includes cracked and spalled concrete, exposed rebar, water damage and other structural issues.

The 1,500-space St. Louis Centre East garage is located near The Dome and America’s Center convention complex and provides parking for employees of multiple downtown companies, including one of downtown’s largest businesses Stifel Financial which partially leases the garage.

The city’s Land Clearance for Redevelopment Board (LCRA) voted at a December 2023 special meeting to approve a $2 million bid from Western to shore-up the garage’s third through sixth levels. The scope of work includes:

  • Restoration of the curbs, columns, beams and ceiling
  • Partial- and full-depth deck repairs
  • Intricately designed shoring installation
  • Post tension investigation and repair
  • Removal and installation of new deck coating

Western expects to take 8-9 months to complete the structural repairs. The garage will remain open for the duration of the project with traffic diverted around designated work areas.

Made of concrete and steel, parking garages provide visitors and their vehicles with shelter from the elements and often provide access to housing or office space. However, protecting the structure itself from the constant onslaught of environmental stressors and wear-and-tear comes with its own set of challenges. Vehicles regularly entering parking garages leave water, oil and muck behind. Not to mention salt and deicers tracked in during the winter months that can corrode the structure's concrete and steel support system. Routine maintenance on a parking structure is recommended to avoid costly repairs and restorations that can be disruptive to tenants and cause unexpected costs and safety concerns.
