Progressive Design-Build: Horizontal and Airport Case Studies
01/11/2024 - 01/11/2024
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM MST

Event Description
The design-build construction delivery method is a project delivery method that involves a single contract, one entity, and one unified flow of work. One application of design-build delivery is via a stepped, or progressive process (commonly referred to as Progressive Design-Build or PDB). PDB uses a qualifications-based or best value selection, followed by a process whereby the owner then “progresses” towards a design and contract price with the team (thus the term “Progressive”).

Join us for a deep dive into two case studies of Progressive Design-Build. We will cover the fundamentals of Progressive Design-Build and explore how it was employed for the successful completion of the San Diego Airport Terminal 1 Replacement Project and the Peaks to Plains Trail Project.

Agenda (MST)

12:00 - 12:15 pm - Progressive Design-Build Introduction
12:15 - 12:45 pm - Peak to Plains Trail
12:45 - 1:15 pm - San Diego Airport Terminal #1 Replacement
1:15 - 1:30 - Q and A

1.5 DBIA CEU

Peaks to Plains Trail Project(s): The Peaks to Plains Trail is a grand dream to one day connect the three million residents of the Denver metro area to the Continental Divide at Loveland Pass via a 65-mile multi-use trail. With over one mile of elevation change, multiple federally threatened species, some of the state’s most challenging whitewater, and countless geologic constraints, this is way more than your typical trail. It won a 2023 Grand Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies as one of the top eight engineering projects in the country. This project includes one of the first instances of a federally funded, horizontal construction in Colorado to use the Progressive Design-Build delivery method.

Speakers: Matt Brenkle, CEI Constructors and Scot Grossman, Jefferson County

San Diego Airport Terminal #1 Replacement: The San Diego Terminal 1 Replacement Project is much more than just a terminal Replacement. In addition to the new 1.2 million square foot terminal scope the project included a new roadway system with 9 new bridges, a 5,000 space parking structure, central utility plan upgrades, and space reservation for a future transit station. All of this work and the over 30 design and consulting firms are being managed by Flatiron in conjunction with our sister company Turner.

Speakers: Steven Fry, Flatiron West and Jim Frost, Kleinfelder

Learning Objective:

  1. Understand the key characteristics of Progressive Design-Build and how it differs from Traditional Design-Build.
  2. Benefits of the Progressive Design-Build Method from the Owner and Contractor Perspective
  3. How to build trust among the team throughout the project.
  4. Understand how to add value and resilience through risk mitigation
