Event Description
The Oklahoma Racing Commission has implemented a novel and new approach to protect horses in the care of trainers who have been found to have managed equine athletes who have shown an abnormal and materially elevated pattern of severe post-race distress, including repeated incidents in which horses were unable to safely leave the track under their own power and required transport from the racing surface. The commission has issued Emergency Protective Orders that states that the pattern was repeated, documented, and sufficiently serious to require immediate regulatory intervention affecting over 170 quarter horses in the care of three trainers.
The orders are temporary and intended to make sure that affected horses undergo greater scruitiny to ensure that they are not at risk when allowed to return to racing.
In my opinion, this is a novel and aggresive approach to safeguard horses and get to the bottom of relevant issues.
