Gavotte” from Album des enfants, 1ère série, Op.123, no. 5

Chaminade was a French pianist and composer and a recording artist.  In 1901 she made a gramophone recording of seven of her piano pieces.  Prior to World War 1 she also recorded piano rolls.  In 1913 she became the first female composer to be granted the Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur.

The Album des enfants, op. 123 are a two volume collection of character pieces for the piano.  Like Robert Schumann’s Album für die Jugend, these pieces were intended for students.  However, unlike Schumann’s Album für die Jugend, Chaminade does not “write down” to the student’s level, rather she expects the student rise to the occasion.

Performance Notes -- These recordings were made on baroque-style instruments.  This is a character piece, practice your chromatic scales and “ham it up”!
