There are two versions of this fantasia available on the website. The higher one is for SAT recorders; the lower one is for ATB recorders. They are in different keys but are otherwise identical. (The versions can’t be mixed!)
Byrd’s fantasias were written for viol (viola da gamba) players, and this three-part consort piece works smoothly for recorder players. Imitation is interwoven with freer counterpoint. The piece becomes more florid as it increases in rhythmic intensity. A lovely, graceful fantasia, this work sounds fine in both the higher and lower transcriptions.
