An 'Amarilli' Fantasy

This trio is founded on Giulio Caccini's famous 'Amarilli mia bella' (Le nuove musiche–1602). In Caccini's lifetime, Jacob van Eyck composed solo variations on it for the recorder, and Peter Philips for the virginals. Inspired by van Eyck, Hans Martin Linde (b. 1930) also composed a solo setting. The tune is readily recognizable in the present work, despite significant rhythmic alterations to the original. The trio blends modern and traditional harmonic practices.

An easy fantasy on the “Amarilli mia bella” melody from the 16th century, suitable for intermediate players. The composer brings together an AAT trio exploring the tune, exercising tasteful restraint in rhythmic or chromatic twists. This trio could also be played ATB; the middle line sits low in the alto range and the bottom line fits on a bass recorder reading up the octave. A visit to the Philips keyboard version or the simple van Eyck solo will help familiarize players with the melody, and further appreciate the fun treatments in this new fantasy. Occasional ornaments and one septuplet add interest without gratuitous difficulty. This fantasy would pair well with the van Eyck in an “old and new” program.
