Webinar Part 1 - Becoming an SLP Superhero - Tips & Tricks to Make You Invincible During Cognitive Rehab post-TBI

Dr. Jessica Brown is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Speech, Language, & Hearing Sciences at the University of Arizona where she runs the Cognitive Communication Brain Lab. She completed her bachelor’s degree at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and both her M.S. and Ph.D. at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She currently serves on the Executive Board for the Brain Injury Alliance of Arizona and chairs national committees for both the American Speech Language Hearing Association and the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences. She is also a member of the mild traumatic brain injury task force for the American Congress of Rehabilitative Medicine and serves in various capacities for other professional and service-based organizations. Her research, teaching, and clinical interests focus on developing ecologically-valid assessments; creating Return-to-Learn practices; evaluating augmentative supports and strategies; and examining visual and cognitive abilities to improve functional outcomes for individuals with traumatic brain injury, stroke, and brain tumors. Her research is currently funded through the National Institute of Health and internally through the University of Arizona. 
Brief Course Description:  During this course, we will cover relevant background information related to cognitive deficits following mild-moderate traumatic brain injury and the role of the SLP in care for these individuals. We will also discuss practical tips for maximizing assessment of cognitive deficits across a variety of settings and practice creating person-centered treatment plans that fully triangulate current best practices, clinical experience, and patient goals/needs. Case studies and hands-on learning opportunities will be incorporated throughout. 
Following completion of this presentation you will be able to:
• Discuss the role of the SLP in cognitive therapy
• Recognize primary cognitive deficits following mild-moderate TBI
