Heather Starmer, MA CCC-SLP, BCS-S  is a Clinical Associate Professor and Director of the Head and Neck Cancer Speech and Swallowing Rehabilitation Center at Stanford University. Prior to joining the faculty at Stanford University, Heather served as the lead of the head and neck cancer rehabilitation program at Johns Hopkins University.

 

Course Description: This three- part series will provide attendees with the most up to date information about head and neck cancers, the interventions used to treat them, and assessment and management strategies.  An evidence-based approach will be emphasized and a case-based discussion format will be integrated into each part of the series. . 

 

Learning Objectives:

1.      Participants will be able to discuss changes in the epidemiology of head and neck cancer and the resultant changes in oncologic treatment.

2.      Participants will be able to establish a comprehensive battery of assessment tools for evaluating head and neck cancer patients.

3.      Participants will be able to implement an evidence-based pre-habilitative and rehabilitative treatment program for patients with head and neck cancer.

Time Ordered Agenda:

Session 1, May 10th  Updates in head and neck cancer epidemiology and treatment

·       5-10 minutes: Introduction to series and speaker

·       40 minutes: Current epidemiology of head and neck cancer and implications for speech language pathologists

·       40 minutes: Oncologic treatment modalities and their impact on communication and swallowing

·       15 minutes: Case presentation

·       15 minutes: Q&A
Session 2, May 17th: Comprehensive assessment of communication and swallowing in patients with head and neck cancer

·       5-10 minutes: Introduction and review of key points from session 1

·       15 minutes: Baseline assessment of oral cavity cancer patients undergoing surgery

·       15 minutes: Baseline assessment of laryngeal cancer patients undergoing surgery and/or radiation

·       15 minutes: Baseline assessment of patients undergoing non-surgical therapy

·       30 minutes: Optimizing the instrumental evaluation

·       20 minutes: Case review

·       15 minutes: Q&A

Session 3, May 24th: Prevention and rehabilitation of communication and swallowing disorders in patients with head and neck cancer

·       5-10 minutes: Introduction and key points from session 2

·       20 minutes: Prevention of radiation associated dysphagia

·       10 minutes: SLP management during radiation therapy

·       30 minutes: Optimizing swallowing therapy for patients with dysphagia

·       10 minutes: Treatment of Late-RAD

·       10 minutes: Collaboration with other professionals to optimize outcomes

·       15 minutes: Case review

·       15 minutes: Q&A
